Introducing SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2: Telco Cloud platform to elevate 5G experience
We are pleased to announce the general availability of SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2. The newest version of the SUSE Telco platform offers improved flexibility and manageability, and accelerates AI-driven operations, while remaining reliably high-performing.
SUSE Edge for Telco is the new name for SUSE ATIP and reflects the common architecture used as the foundations of both SUSE Edge for Telco and the general SUSE Edge product families. Edge for Telco continues to build on those foundations with a purpose built for Telco collection of features and enhancements.
“SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2, the next major release of SUSE’s flagship Telco platform is cloud native, modular and highly secure. The SUSE stack provides Telcos the foundation to deploy and manage CNFs at scale, in the 5G Core and RAN”, said Keith Basil, General Manager of the SUSE Edge Business Unit. “The 100% open source SUSE stack also takes CSPs a step closer to their goal of ecosystem disaggregation, allowing them to choose best of breed CNF vendors and hardware vendors.”
What is SUSE Edge for Telco?
SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2 is a telco cloud platform that enables telecom companies to transition to a cloud native architecture, unify cloud native applications on one horizontal platform, and tap new revenue streams, while optimizing operational expenses. SUSE Edge for Telco is adaptable, and offers CSPs the flexibility to use the stack to host CNFs/VNFs, at the Mobile Core or RAN, or host Telco IT applications on the public cloud or on premises.
SUSE has been a strong contributor to Project Sylva from its inception. SUSE Telco stack is aligned with Project Sylva requirements and promotes the disaggregation of the Telco ecosystem, providing a cloud stack that is hardware and application agnostic and can serve as a unified horizontal telco cloud platform for any telco use case. In addition, SUSE Telco also supports the deterministic latency and forwarding performance needs of 5G RAN and broadband access networks. These capabilities are instrumental in helping telecom companies guarantee the right Quality of Experience (QoE) for customers.
What’s new in SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2?
SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2 is a telco-optimized cloud platform, specifically validated for high data throughput to ensure the best performance and experiences for end customers. The stack also supports Precision Timing Protocol (PTP), enabling it to maintain stringent timing synchronization, without drift.
Additional capabilities of the SUSE Telco solution include:
- Tailored validated designs: The SUSE solution provides a flexible, telco-optimized platform with validated designs for CSPs and their ecosystem of vendors. It supports both ARM and Intel platforms. The validated designs dramatically improve customer ramp-up time and ensure the performance of telecom networks.
- Extended lifecycle: Every even numbered release starting with SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2 provides 24 months of Long Term Support. The release cadence of the SUSE Telco stack is aligned with the CNCF upstream and Rancher Prime release cadence.
- Easily managed and scaled: SUSE Edge for Telco provides a management solution that is designed to easily deploy the full Telco cloud stack, from OS and Kubernetes to network functions. Full stack automation is enabled by SUSE Telco stack components such as Upgrade Controller and Release Manifest, and the use of Edge Image Builder to perform reliable and secure stack upgrades.
- Best-in-class security and compliance: The SUSE Telco stack builds on the integrated compliance and security capabilities and certifications of SUSE’s underlying platforms. The Telco stack utilizes these underlying capabilities for the programmatic application of security practices in configuration, delivery and governance.
- Built for the edge: More than a decade of working as a supplier to tier-1 network equipment providers means a mature high-performance edge runtime and a small-footprint edge stack. Components are purpose built for edge computing. In addition to its technology, SUSE’s Premium Support services provide customers with access to expert assistance for resolving complex issues, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery even in mission-critical scenarios.
SUSE Edge for Telco 3.2 will be generally available in January 2025. Reach out to SUSE and explore how we can help you in your journey to implement Telco solutions that work the best for you.
