March 2023: International Women’s Month

Tuesday, 9 May, 2023

Every March, we commemorate the achievements and progress in the struggle for gender equality. And on March 8th, the world joined hands to celebrate International Women’s Day. This year, we honor the past, present, and future of women and their vital roles within society. As the sponsor for this month’s Global Engagement theme and employee network lead for SUSE Women in Tech, I aim to create a secure space where women at SUSE can confidently express themselves, share their accomplishments, and speak openly about their experiences.

This year, the Women in Tech network partnered with SUSECares for SUSE’s #EmbraceEquity campaign. SUSECares is SUSE’s philanthropic giving program that empowers our people to volunteer their time and direct corporate donations to non-profit organizations and charities of choice. We chose to support AHBAP – a non-governmental organization (NGO) driving relief, aid, and support efforts in Turkey by providing people affected by the recent earthquakes with housing, food, medicine supply, and more. In addition, we were fortunate to have a member of AHBAP host an internal discussion of the recent tragedies in Turkey and Syria and how SUSE employees can contribute and give back.

Each week in March, we hosted various internal and external guest speakers in line with our “In Conversation With” series, centered around this year’s International Women’s Day theme: #EmbraceEquity.

Kicking off the first day of Women’s History Month was a conversation between myself and software engineer turned author and screenwriter Susan Rigetti. We discussed how her infamous blog post led to her being named one of the “Silence Breakers” whose voices launched the cultural #MeToo movement, eventually becoming one of TIME’s 2017 People of the Year. This event set the tone for the rest of the month, as it cultivates an environment within SUSE where everyone should continue to speak up and give a voice to those who cannot speak up for themselves. I was so fortunate to be a part of this event and work with Susan behind the scenes, as she was such a joy to work with in creating this event.

Next, we had our first ever “SUSE Women’s Panel” featuring April Moh, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Christine Ashton, Chief Information Officer, and Denise Schannon, Senior Director of Engineering for Rancher, moderated by Shelby Park, SUSE Services Delivery Manager and part of the Women in Tech Steering Committee. Together, they gave advice, shared their experiences as female leaders in Tech, and discussed how they #SUSEEmbraceEquity.

Our first internal event was a robust conversation about care equity between Amber Washington, SUSE’s Services Engagement Manager, and Amy Fredricks, Customer for Life Program Manager. They spoke about Amy’s experience with finding her cancer and how she advocated for her treatment.

Next was “In Conversation with” Tia White, the General Manager of AI and Machine Learning at Amazon Web Services, and Lynne Chamberlain, President and Chief Executive Officer at Rancher Government Solutions. During this riveting discussion, Tia spoke about her career in helping companies harness the power of disruptive and emerging technologies. She shared the importance of mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship for women, Black, and Brown people in and out of the workplace. Tia openly shared her strategies for managing her work and personal life and provided valuable tips and insights to our audience based on her own experiences.

To close out March, leadership coach Marion Chapsal and Amy Sanford, IMO / EMPO Program manager, hosted an internal discussion around understanding your critical inner voice and thoughts while strengthening the voice of inner sage and champion.

While I sat on the West Coast, I was excited to see how our SUSE Asia-Pacific and Japan teams celebrated International Women’s Day in their way! Dawn Liong, HR Business Partner, shared, “As part of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), it is a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women and reinforcing the thought of gender equality. It has become a tradition for the Asia Pacific and Japan employees at SUSE to participate and create a DE&I Statement on International Women’s Day.”

Each guest brought unique experiences and perspectives to the month and contributed significantly to our theme of #SUSEEmbraceEquity. It is essential to pause and reflect on women’s equality’s social, economic, cultural, and political advancement and celebrate those who have tried to lead us to an equal world.

I want to give a heartfelt thank you to every single internal and external guest speaker we had, as they spoke openly about their world and shared their deeply personal experiences, which is not an easy thing to do. Although each speaker had a different story to tell, they reiterated the importance of speaking up and showed there are various ways to raise awareness. March reiterated that no matter what action you take, everyone can work collectively to #EmbraceEquity.

Safeguard Your SAP Landscape on Google Cloud Platform

Tuesday, 9 May, 2023

Undertaking the cloud migration of SAP S/4HANA can be difficult and face various challenges: both planned and unplanned downtime can stall business continuity and result in significant loss, and very often, a major outage is the result of accumulated minor issues that could have been identified and remediated in early stage. Enhanced security is needed to protect the data and applications, however managing a large-scale SAP environment to meet security compliance may require significant resources. Given all that, it’s critical to design and implement a robust SAP landscape with operational efficiency.

SUSE collaborates with Google Cloud Platform to safeguard the SAP landscape through the following solutions and services:

SLES for SAP Applications

SLES for SAP Applications is the leading Linux platform for SAP HANA, SAP NetWeaver and SAP S/4HANA solutions and is endorsed by SAP. It consists of the technical components to accelerate SAP deployment, minimize downtime, and increase operational efficiency. The pre-built images of SLES for SAP Applications are available in the GCP Marketplace with significant cost saving options.

Optimize SAP Workload with Auto-Tuning

saptune is a configuration tool to prepare a system to work optimally with SAP workloads by implementing the recommendations from various SAP notes. System admin can select the notes to be executed by saptune or choose one of the predefined groups – called solutions, e.g. HANA, NetWeaver, S4HANA-APPSERVER, etc. It relieves the system admin from having to collect the requirements from various SAP notes, or even having to remember which SAP notes to execute. You can even create your own predefined groups – your own solutions.

Minimize Downtime with High Availability Solutions

Besides Google Cloud’s built-in high availability features like Live Migration, SUSE offers critical High Availability solutions to enhance the SLA of SAP workloads. Two of the key components of SLES for SAP Applications are the High Availability Extension and resource agents. The High Availability Extension provides Pacemaker, an open-source cluster framework. The resource agents manage automated failover of SAP HANA System Replication, S/4HANA ASCS/ERS ENSA2, and NetWeaver ASCS/ERS ENSA1.

HANA System Replication (HSR) is a native HANA HA feature; however, its failover is not automated without the help of a 3rd party solution. SUSE has developed solutions to reliably identify the issue and trigger the failover in a timely manner. Various scenarios including HANA scale-up and scale-out are supported on GCP. Most recently, SUSE has released a new solution to tackle indexserver failure, called Fast-Dying indexserver HA solution, that proactively checks the service state change of HANA, identifying indexserver failure and triggering failover accordingly. The result for very large HANA databases is that the recovery time from a failing indexserver is reduced from hours to minutes. The details can be found in the blog Emergency Braking for SAP HANA Dying Indexserver.

For SAP NetWeaver and S/4HANA, the HA solutions are based on ASCS/ERS enqueue replication, ENSA1 and ENSA2, respectively. SUSE’s solutions are SAP HA-Interface certified to help avoid split-brain situation when customers perform maintenance through SAP tools like sapcontrol and MMC. For the details of the benefits of the HA-Interface, please refer to this blog SLES for SAP Applications 15 is now Certified for SAP S/4HANA and NetWeaver HA-Interface Certification.

For the list of supported HA solutions for SAP, please check this one-stop reference: Supported High Availability Solutions by SLES for SAP Applications.

Lifecycle Management with SUSE Manager

SUSE Manager is a true open-source infrastructure management solution designed to simplify and secure your entire mixed Linux environment. With its help, system admins can automate infrastructure security & compliance of the entire Linux estate, ensure compliance with internal security policies and external regulations, and optimize operations and reduce costs. It supports a hybrid environment, on-prem, in the Cloud, or on the Edge.

Enhance Security without Downtime with Live Patching

No disruption during patching is another critical principal for operational efficiency. SUSE has extended support of live patching not only in kernel, but also in user space, to enhance security compliance and reduce planned downtime. OpenSSL and glibc, two dependencies of SAP HANA, are the libraries commonly affected by security vulnerabilities. Without the user space live patching, a patch on these libraries will require a system reboot. With Live Patching, customers can avoid expensive reboot (for up to 1 year) to in-memory HANA databases and other mission critical workloads.

Maximize Insights with Validation and Monitoring

Complex HA deployments can often fail because of the lack of insights. Issues may not be fixed in a timely manner, leading to outages. Configuration errors are one of the main causes behind outages. These often take the form of minor issues that snowball into a major disruption. Therefore, it’s important to have a clear view of the SAP landscape during operations.

SUSE provides solutions to identify configuration issues and drifts in the Day-2 operation. SUSE Trento provides insights into the SAP landscape to help businesses discover, monitor, and proactively fix SAP system problems with a single console.

Enhance Security with Pre-Hardened Cloud Images

To improve overall security, SUSE provides hardened images SLES for SAP Applications 15, based on combination of government and industry standards STIG and CIS, minus rules that can only be applied after instance creation. The profile pcs-hardening-sap.profile is available in the ComplianceAsCode repository. It serves as a baseline for customers to further customize depending on individual application needs. The images are available in both BYOS and PAYG consumption models on GCP.

SUSE Services

When customers need help to build a cloud-optimized SAP Environment, they can confidently rely on SUSE Services. Out of the many services that SUSE offers, the following are the most popular offerings that are highly recommended to every SAP deployment on GCP:

SUSE ASSIST: Optimization Services

This service is ideal for when you are ready to optimize your infrastructure via technical health checks, fine-tune solutions to meet new business demands or integrate new solutions. Optimization Services ensures that you continue to deliver high quality IT services after migrating to Google Cloud Platform.

SUSE Premium Support Services

The premium services team is backed by SUSE technical support, product management, and engineering. Since SUSE Premium Support engineers are also experts in HA solutions, the service is highly recommended to any SAP customers running HA solutions.

Get ready for SUSE Manager 4.3.6!

Tuesday, 9 May, 2023

Get Ready for SUSE Manager 4.3.36

In just a few weeks, SUSE Manager 4.3.6 will be available for you to download!  While this is not a major release, plenty of new features come with it. There are many reasons to upgrade to this new release as soon as possible.  Let’s talk about a few:

Freedom of choice

SUSE Manager is the only infrastructure management solution that manages more than 15 different Linux distributions.  And with this newest release, we will add to that list with the management of all the RHEL 9 variations (Rocky Linux, Alma Linux, RHEL 9) and of course support our very own, and latest, SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP5.  So if you are running your business critical workloads on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), or even if you are not running any SLES at all, isn’t it time you had a single management solution for all your distributions that you can manage from a single console?  As we like to say SUSE Manager manages ANY Linux, ANY Where, at ANY Scale.  Take charge of your IT infrastructure with SUSE Manager and experience real freedom!

Security taken seriously

Security is no laughing matter and understandably so.  According to the IBM Cost of a Data Breach 2022 Report, the average cost of a data breach in the United States is $9.44M – almost twice the global amount of $4.35M.  And, when you consider more than 60% of breaches can be prevented with good patching habits, having an IT management solution that manages all your Linux infrastructure becomes invaluable.

SUSE Manager is that solution.  From automated CVE updates to the ability to scan against SCAP profiles using OpenSCAP, SUSE Manager practically automates security for you.  Use Prometheus and Grafana to monitor your entire infrastructure in real-time and visually display results.  Automate Patch Management and take advantage of Live Patching, in SUSE Linux Enterprise, to minimize downtime.  It’s all available in this single solution.

With this new release, we enable you to install Program Temporary Fixes (PTFs) directly from your SUSE Manager console.  That means no more manually patching servers – saving your admins valuable time.

If your company is taking security seriously, it’s time to upgrade to a better IT Management Solution – SUSE Manager.

Extended support

Who among us has the time to continually update a system?   Yet to get the support, you need to upgrade.  It’s quite a conundrum!  Well, check this out – The SUSE Manager 4.3 series will be supported until June 2025 (Which includes 4.3.6 and upcoming updates).  That means if you upgrade today, you’ll get access to our outstanding Technical Support for more than two years!  This also gives you time to experience our upcoming release of SUSE Manager 5.0, which will have many, new innovative features to make infrastructure management even simpler!

All the updates, patches, PTFs, and new features will be readily available to you with 4.3.6, and even more coming with the upcoming maintenance updates.  And if you are still running 4.2, it’s time to upgrade as support ends October 31, 2023.  And updating from 4.2 to 4.3 is super simple – something that can be completed in less than an hour (depending on the size of your database).

Stay tuned as we’ll have a blog dedicated to upgrading from SUSE Manager 4.2 to SUSE Manager 4.3 in the upcoming weeks.

Management in the cloud – coming soon

SUSE Manager has always been available in the cloud as a Bring Your Own Subscription (BYOS).  Our big news is the introduction of SUSE Manager 4.3.7, we will be offering SUSE Manager as a PAYG offering in the AWS marketplace (followed later by releasing PAYG with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud).  This allows you to manage infrastructure from the cloud on your terms.

PAYG provides many benefits to you – including the ability for metered usage, scalability on your terms, and single billing from your cloud provider.  More on these options will be featured in a future blog.

Better together – SUMA and Services

Project Snow Cow: A hat-tip to Apple’s MacOS Snow Leopard release that drove the inspiration for Stability, Reliability & Extensibility in Rancher

Tuesday, 18 April, 2023

Kubernetes has reached an interesting point in its lifecycle where it is now the default choice to run business-critical applications across varied infrastructures, from virtual machines to bare metal and in the cloud. This, combined with the evolving need for a single pane of glass to centralize and manage infrastructure and application deployments, has required IT teams to focus on a stable, reliable and extensible platform that can scale on demand.

At SUSE, our product direction and strategy are driven by deepening our understanding of our users and customer needs. In a post-Covid-19 world, achieving Kubernetes nirvana became the primary goal for IT teams, focusing on stability, reliability and extensibility driving usage and purchase behavior. To help understand how we solve this problem most effectively, we got back to the basics.

With the support of our users and our customers, we kicked off ‘Project Snow Cow’ – our hat-tip to the mythological status of Snow Leopard in the Apple community as the catch-all referring to stable software from “the good old days” of Mac and moved forward with building a prioritized delivery plan to make Rancher more stable, reliable, extensible and scalable on demand.

Project Snow Cow became the bedrock of our v2.7.x releases. Starting with Rancher v2.7.0, we fixed 132 bugs and made over 40+ product changes over the week of Thanksgiving 2022. Rancher v2.7.1 came in next in January 2023 with dedicated security fixes to improve our overall security posture.

And now Rancher v2.7.2, released in April 2023, took the crown with 204 total resolved issues involving 140+ bugs and 40+ product enhancements, including production-grade GA support for Kubernetes 1.25, AKS 1.25 & GKE 1.25. To facilitate effective usage of K8s 1.25, Rancher v2.7.2 also adds a new custom resource definition (CRD): PSA configuration templates. These templates are pre-defined security configurations that you can apply to RKE and RKE2/K3s clusters out of the box. A lot of goodness is packed into one!

Building on the success of ‘Project Snow Cow,’ which focused on stability and reliability, our feature teams started adding the desired levels of extensibility with the introduction of UI extensions that can layer independently on top and allow you to scale up and have a single pane of glass management view across all your cloud native tools, from container application development to container security and deployment.

These UI extensions were first introduced in v2.7.0 and now allow for a true plug-and-play model into the Rancher platform to accommodate policy management, security and audit compliance use cases, among other things. Alongside v2.7.2, we now offer a Kubewarden extension for Rancher that makes it easy to install Kubewarden into a downstream cluster and manage Kubewarden and its OPA-based policies right from within the Rancher Cluster Explorer user interface. You can see how we build extensions in the upcoming Global Online Meetup on May 3, 2023, at 11 am EST.

Evolving the Rancher Prime Subscription

In line with Rancher v2.7.2, I am excited to also announce the next iteration of the Rancher Prime Subscription; Rancher Prime 1.1. The subscription allows customers to extend the benefits of the Rancher Platform to now get a trusted, private registry download mechanism for their entire Kubernetes Management stack. This trusted delivery mechanism and our SLA-backed support model ensures upstream changes and disruptions can be insulated for production environments ensuring changes like the recent deprecation of PSPs in Kubernetes 1.25 and the move to PSA can be minimized dramatically. It also allows customers to extend their SLA-backed support confidence to cover ancillary cloud-native tools like Kubewarden (OPA Policy Management) & Elemental (OS Management) UI extensions in Rancher.

Customers also now get access to the Rancher Prime Knowledgebase, a curated, contextually relevant set of self-service material through the SUSE Collective that gives you direct access to Kubernetes cheat sheets, scalability documentation and white-glove onboarding guidance. Through the Collective, you can also request Product Roadmaps and engage in peer discussions to help accelerate your cloud native journey.

What’s next?

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to join the party and test-drive Rancher v2.7.2. Project Snow Cow has a few more releases coming up and that will ensure Rancher at scale is performant. On the Rancher Prime side, customers can expect to see more supported extensions and LTSS options coming in the next iteration. If you are seeking to get more value from your Rancher deployment, get in touch with our team to learn more.

Remember to stay tuned for updates via our Slack and our GitHub page.
