Oracle backup fails with EIO when direct IO and asynchronous IO is used

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 4
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 2

Situation

When running the Oracle backup process, it fails with I/O Errors written to the Oracle log.

Resolution

This is a known issue caused by problems in the kernel based asynchronous I/O and direct I/O features. This issue was fixed for SLES10 by the kernel release 2.6.16.60-0.34 , and for SLES9 by the kernel release 2.6.5-7.315
