Login Failed" message when logging in through RDP

This document (7003389) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (SLED 11) or Server 11 (SLES 11)
openSUSE 11.1

Situation

RDP remote access is enabled but when attempting to connect from an RDP client (Windows or Linux) "login failed" is displayed similar to this connection log:

This message generally means that the user authentication failed (bad password, user ID, etc.) but there is a program problem that can cause this to happen if the very first time you attempt to login through RDP the "root" user is used.  Once the failure has occurred logging in with any other user will result in the same message.

Restarting the xrdp server (rcxrdp restart) will successfully restart the service but will not fix the problem.

Resolution

Reboot the system and when connecting through RDP for the first time make sure you authenticate as a user other than "root".  Once you have logged in with a regular user you can logout and log back in as "root" and it will work fine.

Additional Information

This is fixed in the updated versions of xrdp greater than version 0.4.1-28.2.
