Adding disks with LVM meta data on the fly doesn't trigger rescan of volume groups

This document (7006241) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

With SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, hot-plugging disks to the running system which contain LVM meta data triggers an automatic rescan and activation of newly found volume groups. This does not occur on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 anymore.

Resolution

The changed behavior is intentional to avoid race conditions and high system load due to constant rescans when adding a large number of disks. Only LVM volumes on device mapper volumes or loop devices will be activated automatically on hot plug events. This change matches the behavior on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.
