Error: need more than 1 value to unpack when starting a vm with drbd

This document (7007426) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1
XEN

Situation

When attempting to start a VM on a block device of type DRBD the following error occurs:
"Error: need more than 1 value to unpack"

Example from /etc/xen/vm/<vm_name> config file:
disk=[ 'drbd:r0,xvda,w', ]

Resolution

Fixed in March 2011 update of xen-tools package.

Additional Information

A work-around (and actually the recommended configuration) is to manage DRBD outside of XEN and then to use a block device of type PHY to launch the VM.

Example from /etc/xen/vm/<vm_name> config file:
disk=[ 'phy:/dev/drbd0,xvda,w', ]
