Installation fails with ACPI Exception

This document (7009309) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 4

Situation

On certain machines the boot process of the installation stops with the following or a similar repeating message:

ACPI Exception (utmutex-0257): AE_TIME, Thread 0 could not acquire Mutex [8] [20060127]

Resolution

Abort the installation and try it again. It should work fine then. The kernel/boot failure only happens once in 5 attempts. After the installation immediately perform an update to the latest maintenance kernel (version 2.6.16.60-0.91.1 or higher) which includes a fix for this behavior.

Cause

Additional Information

The issue occured because of a bug in the  ACPI support stack of the installation kernel.
