SUSEConnect error: SocketError: getaddrinfo: Name or service not known

Environment


SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 12

Situation

When trying to register a SLE12 server to the SuSE Customer Center via command line using SUSEConnect the following error is produced: 
SUSEConnect error: SocketError: getaddrinfo: Name or service not known 

Resolution

The possible issues are: 
  • The machine can't reach a DNS server to resolve the name to IP
  • The DNS server cannot resolve the hostname

Resolution:
Make sure a DNS server is setup for this machine and it can resolve the hostname of scc.suse.com as well as updates.suse.com.

Cause

The SLE12 server cannot reach the registration server (https://scc.suse.com).
