AutoYaST reports ERROR: Element rule has extra content: <attribute>

This document (000020329) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

Automated installation with an AutoYaST profile stops with a warning:

ERROR: Element rule has extra content: dialog

The following screenshot illustrates the whole dialog shown by AutoYaST:

Resolution

To verify if the AutoYaST syntax is valid, please use the command jing:

jing /usr/share/YaST2/schema/autoyast/rng/rules.rng rules.xml

If there is a syntax error, the command above provides information about the line containing the error.
The command jing is provided by the package called jing, which is available in SLE-Module-DevTools15-XXX-Pool
repository.
There are two ways to deal with this situation:
  1. Update the profile with the correct syntax
  2. Add YAST_SKIP_XML_VALIDATION=1 boot parameter to skip the profile validation

Cause

With SLES15 AutoYaST now validates the profile at runtime, reporting issues to the user.
