dmesg prints 'nvme0: Admin Cmd(0x7f), I/O Error (sct 0x0 / sc 0x1)' error

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

On a normal running system, 'dmesg' prints the following error messages:

'nvme0: Admin Cmd(0x7f), I/O Error (sct 0x0 / sc 0x1)'

Resolution

These messages can be safely ignored.

Cause

NVMe commands with opcode 0x7F are "NVMe Vendor Specific Commands".

They allow the host OS to send vendor-specific additional or customized commands to the NVMe controller.

In this case the controller responded with 'invalid opcode' (sc 0x1) which indicates that the controller does not support that specific command received.
The OS itself does not issue these commands; they usually come from other third-party tools that are not part of the OS.
