Using the face browser for logins

This document (3264708) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

This document describes how to set up the face browser for workstation logins, and add faces for a user.

Resolution

First, the face browser must be enabled and configured. This can be done by :
  1. su to root.
  2. Run /opt/gnome/sbin/gdmsetup
  3. On the General tab, determine what the Local greeter is set to.
  4. Click on the appropriate tab.
  5. If using the "Themed Greeter", select an appropriate greeter that includes a browser.
  6. Click on the Security tab.
  7. Enable "Show Face Browser".
The next phase is to create a "face" icon for the browser :
  1. Create an image that is desired for the face in the browser.
  2. Crop or resize the image to 96 pixels by 96 pixels.
  3. Save the image as either a jpeg or a PNG image.
  4. Copy the new image to /opt/gnome/share/pixmaps/faces/ .
  5. Run "gdmphotosetup".
  6. Select the image from the list.
  7. Logout.
The photos should be available and the user should have a customized icon.

Additional Information

Please note that, if the workstation is public, having a list of valid users available to anyone who visits the workstation can be considered a high security risk. It is suggested that the use of the face or user browsers is not performed on publicly available workstations, or through remote logins.
