SMT update jobs do not install kernel updates

This document (7004732) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Subscription Management Tool 1.1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

Subscription Management Tool 11 (SMT) enables the creation of different types of jobs to be executed on individual clients that
1) are registered against the server and
2) have the smt-client package installed
Update jobs are supposed to install the available patches on the target client(s).

Although an update job completes successfully according to the logs, the kernel updates do not get installed. Other updates do get installed, but since the kernel updates require user interaction (warning that a new kernel is installed - reboot etc.), they get dropped by the update process.

Resolution

The root cause of this is the requirement of a new parameter (--with-interactive) for zypper that is only available in the zypper package 1.0.10-0.1.1 and later. zypper-1.0.10-0.1.1.$arch.rpm is available in the update repositories for SLED/S 11.
However the smt-client package must be updated to version 0.0.13-0.1.1 in order for it to adopt this new parameter. This package is also available in the update repositories for SLED/S 11.
