When increasing number of vCPUs sar archives get corrupted after system reboot

This document (7015964) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3
SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP applications 11 SP3

Situation

Changing the number of assigned vCPUs on a given VM running on VMware ESX(i) will corrupt the sar archives located in /var/log/sa/ after an upcoming reboot. The following error will be seen when executing sar -dp:

sles11sartest:~ # sar -dp
Requested activities not available in file /var/log/sa/sa09

Resolution

Workaround: Move the file to a different location and reinitialize the file using the /usr/lib64/sa/sa1 command.
