hangs in applications (e.g. FireFox and Matlab) after upgrading X11 libraries

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

After upgrading xorg-x11-libX11 libraries to version 7.4-5.11.72.3.1, some applications that make use of these libraries and a graphical interface, no longer function correctly and appear to hang at different points.

Some application windows appear 'empty' or incompletely rendered.

Resolution

Update to the latest maintenance release of xorg-x11-libX11.

Version xorg-x11-libX11-7.4-5.11.72.6.1 released on 2018-06-22 contained a fix for this issue.

Cause

This is due to a bug in the 7.4-5.11.72.3.1 version of the xorg-x11-libX11 libraries.
