iSCSI Clients Not Connecting After Upgrade to SLES 15

This document (000020323) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

After update or upgrade of a SLES 12 system to SLES 15, iSCSI client information may not be present, causing a failure to connect to remote filesystems over iSCSI.

This behavior is due to the fact that the targetcli service is disabled during upgrade:
# systemctl status targetcli
   targetcli.service - "Generic Target-Mode Service (fb)"
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/targetcli.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)

Resolution

In order to restore service, the targetcli service must be manually enabled and started:
systemctl enable targetcli
systemctl start targetcli

Cause

The deprecated targetcli-fb package was replaced in SLES 15 with python3-targetcli-fb or python2-targetcli-fb, which results in systemd service information being reset to the default (disabled/stopped).
