Manually setting guest time, the time does not remain correct

This document (3355865) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

When manually setting the guest time on XEN Guests or configuring an NTP time source for the guest time, the time does not remain correct. The time will even immediately change to an incorrect time.

Resolution

By default, XEN Guests will pull their time from the XEN host. Either change the XEN host to a correct time or disable time synchronization between XEN Host and Guest.

Note: To disable time synchronization between the XEN host and guests, change the following parameter in the XEN guest configuration file:

  • Log in to the virtual machine environment as root.
  • Edit the virtual machine sysctl.conf file in the /etc directory
  • Add or change the following entry:
    • xen.independent_wallclock=1
