Mellanox mlx4_en driver not loading on boot-up

This document (7010836) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

When using a Mellanox Ethernet card the mlx4_en driver is not being loaded on boot-up.
Once you load the mlx4_en driver (with "modprobe mlx4_en") then you can see the ethernet ports and they can be configured in yast.

Resolution

Put the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/mlx4.conf  (You will need to create this file if it doesn't exist).  This entry should all be on one line.

install mlx4_core /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install mlx4_core && /sbin/modprobe mlx4_en

Cause

Additional Information

There was also an issue where if you had a dual ethernet interface on the same Mellanox card then only one port would be visible.  This is fixed in an updated SLES 11 SP1 hwinfo RPM.
