AutoYaST driven installation on Dell server fails to obtain network access in stage2

This document (7016753) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)

Situation

When starting stage2 of AutoYaST driven deployments on Dell servers, the installation server cannot
be reached anymore and the client does not obtain a DHCP address.

Resolution

Please make sure the package biosdevname is included in the packagelist. If this package should not be included, make sure the installation gets started using the kernelparameter biosdevname=0. This will disable support for the predictable naming scheme for embedded network controllers and fall back to the conventional ethX names.

Cause

When the installation is started, the environment provides support for a predictable naming scheme for the embedded network controllers on the mainboard (emX). But when the installation is done, the system boots for the first time from hard disk, the biosdevname package is missing which provides support for this functionality.
