Firstboot fails to register server with SUSE Customer Center

This document (7017360) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

The yast2-firstboot RPM package is installed. The section of /etc/YaST2/firstboot.xml for Customer Center was changed to:

<module>
  <label>Customer Center</label>
  <name>inst_suse_register</name>
  <enabled config:type="boolean">true</enabled>
</module>

An error dialog states: "Calling the YaST module inst_suse_register has failed. More information can be found near the end of the '/var/log/YaST2/y2log' file."

The /var/log/YaST2/y2log files shows:

<3> server(1140) [Interpreter] modules/ProductControl.rb:1360 Can't find YCP client component inst_suse_register: No such file or directory

Running ls -l /usr/share/YaST2/clients/inst_suse* fails to show any inst_suse_register module, but does show inst_scc.rb and scc.rb modules.

Using

<module>
  <label>Customer Center</label>
  <name>inst_scc</name>
  <enabled config:type="boolean">true</enabled>
</module>

fails with the error:

"The base product was not found, check your system. Make sure a product is installed and /etc/products.d/baseproduct is a symlink pointing to the base product .prod file."

However, ls -l /etc/products.d/ shows baseproduct is symlinked to SLES.prod.

Using

<module>
  <label>Customer Center</label>
  <name>scc</name>
  <enabled config:type="boolean">true</enabled>
</module>

launches the customer registration dialog, but you cannot select the Next button to finish the configuration.

Resolution

Reported to Engineering. There is not really a work around. You will need to manually configure the client machine by running yast scc or SUSEConnect.
