smt sync unable to connect registration error and fails with 500 CURL ERROR(28)

This document (7017937) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

While syncing repositories, the following error may be encountered in certain networks:

...
2016-07-26 21:23:01 SMT::SCCAPI - [info]  list products
2016-07-26 21:23:07 SMT::SCCAPI - [error]  Connection to registration server failed with: 500 CURL ERROR(28) Timeout was reached
2016-07-26 21:23:07 main - [error]  Error while fetching Product and Repository data.
...

Resolution

As a workaround, please edit /usr/lib/perl5/vensor/*/SMT/Curl.pm and change $self-connecttimeout(5) to a higher value, e.g. (30).

Future versions of smt will provide a new configuration variable that makes the timeout configurable via /etc/smt.conf:

[LOCAL]
[...]
ConnectionTimeout = 30
[...]

Please check the smt RPM changelog for bug#992764.

Cause

The timeout specified in $self-connecttimeout(5) in /usr/lib/perl5/vendor/*/SMT/Curl.pm may be too short for some environments.
