How to change password policy settings for SUSE Manager

This document (000020920) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Manager 4.x

Situation

For SUSE Manager 4.x releases the default number of characters for user passwords in the WebUI is limited to 32. In case there is a requirement for passwords longer than 32 characters, /etc/rhn/rhn.conf needs to be adjusted.

Resolution

A number of settings for /etc/rhn/rhn.conf allow changing the password policy for the WebUI, the defaults are currently set to:
min_passwd_len = 5
max_passwd_len = 32
min_user_len   = 3
max_user_len   = 64
max_email_len  = 128
In order to change the password policy, the options above need to be entered into /etc/rhn/rhn.conf with the desired values. Run
spacewalk-service restart
afterwards to activate the changes.
