Updating kernel on SLE 11 SP1 breaks CIFS
This document (7006684) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.
Environment
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 1
Situation
The updated machine has a CIFS share mounted.
Browsing the mount point via the command line or GUI is fine, but as soon as a file is read or copied, the machine hangs. To recover from this condition a reboot is required.
The problem did not exist prior to updating the kernel.
This is caused by a change introduced the Linux kernel version 2.6.32.13-0.5.
Resolution
SUSE has fixed the issue in kernel version 2.6.32.19-0.2.1 released in September 2010 and later versions.
From the changelog of kernel 2.6.32.19-0.2.1 :
