qeth group (network interface) not activating on s390x

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3

Situation

On an s390x server running SLES10 SP3, a qeth group is not consistently being activated. A udev debug trace shows that all device numbers are being found, but the following error message is being encountered:

  Device group 0.0.0330 no (yet) available!

Resolution

This issue is resolved with an updated kernel and sysconfig package SLES10 SP3. The version of these packages which contain the fix are as follows:

   kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.67.1
   sysconfig version 0.50.9-13.60.1

In order to resolve this issue, both updated packages are required.
