During SLES installation on IBM Power740+ IOC system, parted does not properly recognize the partition on a disk previously installed with AIX

This document (7014940) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)

Situation

On an IBM Power740+ IOC system, when trying to install SLES 11 SP2 or SLES 11 SP3 on a disk that already contained AIX in it, the SLES partitioning tool parted throws an error during the partitioning stage by reporting either that the disk is not readable or not supported by the partitioning tool.

Resolution

Go to "Expert settings" and "Create new MS-DOS partition table", then create your partitions as usual (i.e. Prep-boot, /, and swap). Now the installation should proceed fine without any issues.
