AWS or Azure SUSE cloud instance missing software repositories

This document (7022311) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 4 (SLES 12 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

SUSE software repositories are not configured for a SLE Pay-As-You-Go cloud instance.
Because of this, zypper or YaST cannot be used to install new software or migrate to a new service pack.

Resolution

Run the following commands to re-register the SLE instance against the Public Cloud Update Infrastructure servers:
 # rm /etc/SUSEConnect
 # rm -f /etc/zypp/{repos,services,credentials}.d/*
 # rm -f /usr/lib/zypp/plugins/services/*
 # sed -i '/^# Added by SMT reg/,+1d' /etc/hosts
 # /usr/sbin/registercloudguest --force-new

Additional Information

This registration method is ONLY applicable to on demand (PAYG) SUSE cloud instances in AWS or Azure public cloud environments.

For standard SUSE installations or BYOS cloud images, the traditional registration method must be used for the respective SLE release :
  • SLE11 systems use suse_register for registration
  • SLE12 systems use SUSEConnect (with the exception of the SLE12/OES2018 product, which uses suse_register to connect to Micro Focus repositories).
Alternatively, these systems may also register against a local mirror such as a SUSE Manager or SMT/RMT server.

SLE instances created in a SUSE OpenStack Cloud environment should use the cloud's local SMT to handle registration.
