Obsolete cloud images still available in marketplace

This document (000021727) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Azure Cloud
Amazon Web Services
Google Cloud

Situation

PAYG images may be available in a cloud provider marketplace after the base product support period has ended.  Some features, such as registration for updates, may be broken and require manual installation of later versions of the packages.

Resolution

Check authoritative sources of lifecycle information.

Sources of lifecycle information are listed in the Additional Information section below.

If the base product has gone end-of-life, do not use the image for a new workload.

Best practice is to only use active images for new workloads.

Use of inactive images for new workloads is generally discouraged.

Deprecated images should only be used to replace an existing workload of the same image in the event of OS recovery.

If the image is no longer available or marked as deleted, the data should be migrated to a supported image.

Please submit a support request to the cloud provider if a feature is broken with a PAYG image that is still supported.

Cause

Different cloud providers have different processes to remove obsolete images.

While our Public Cloud Engineering team strives to remove images when they should no longer be listed, sometimes due to a limitation or process on SUSE's or the cloud provider end, an image may still be available in the marketplace after it has been marked as deleted by our tooling.
