Missing Logical Volume with LVM Checksum Errors

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

When the server boots, the volume group is found, but it's logical volumes will not activate. The vgchange and pvscan commands show a"Checksum error".

# vgchange -ay ops
/dev/sdc: Checksum error
Couldn't read volume group metadata.
Volume group ops metadata is inconsistent
Volume group for uuid not found: m4Cg2vkBVSGe1qSMNDf63v3fDHqN4uEkmWoTq5TpHpRQwmnAGD18r44OshLdHj05
0 logical volume(s) in volume group "ops" now active

# pvscan
/dev/sdc: Checksum error
PV /dev/sdb VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 0 free]
PV /dev/sdc VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 0 free]
PV /dev/sdd VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 150.00 MB free]

Resolution

The LVM meta data on /dev/sdc is corrupt. You will need to restore the LVM meta data from a backup file. LVM meta data backup files are stored in /etc/lvm/backup and /etc/lvm/archive. The vgcfgrestore command by default uses the backup file in /etc/lvm/backup. Run vgcfgrestore to restore the LVM meta data. For example,

# vgcfgrestore ops
/dev/sdc: Checksum error
/dev/sdc: Checksum error
Restored volume group ops

# vgchange -ay ops
1 logical volume(s) in volume group "ops" now active

# pvscan
PV /dev/sdb VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 0 free]
PV /dev/sdc VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 0 free]
PV /dev/sdd VG ops lvm2 [200.00 MB / 150.00 MB free]
Total: 4 [600.00 MB] / in use: 4 [600.00 MB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ]
