Attempting to run SMT staging from Test to Production aborts with the message "An error has occurred while creating a snapshot"

This document (7014480) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)

Situation

SMT Staging aborts when creating a production repository from a test repository. The staging
process aborts with the message "An error has occurred while creating a snapshot". The log file shows the message:

"Unable to generate repository /srv/www/htdocs/repo/$RCE/..."

Resolution

Looking closer at the issue the staging was run with the following command which provides more information:

smt staging createrepo SLES11-SP2-Updates sle-11-x86_64 --production --debug -L /tmp/prodstage.log

Looking in the /tmp/prodstage.log that was created we see:

2014-01-07 09:53:38 SMT::Parser::RpmMdLocation - [error] SMT::Parser::RpmMdLocation Invalid XML in '/srv/www/htdocs/repo/$RCE/SLES11-SP2-Updates/sle-11-x86_64/.repodata/susedata.xml.gz':

Upon further investigation it was discovered that the partition that contained /tmp was low on space.  /tmp is used during the staging process to copy the files from test to production.  The volume itself was running low on space with no apparent warning and causing staging to fail.

Freeing up approximately 1 GB of space on the volume containing /tmp allowed the staging to complete without errors.

It should also be noted that lack of space on the volume containing /srv/www/htdocs/repo/ could also cause this  issue to occur so both locations should be checked for sufficient space.
