Removing the user list on the login screen in SLE12/SLE 15

This document (7016691) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 15

Situation

By default the login screen for SLE12/SLE15 will show a list of available users to chose from for logging in.  Removing that list and only providing a login username prompt can be preferable for security reasons.

Resolution

To remove the users list so that only a username prompt appears on the login screen do the following as root:

1. Using an editor and create the /etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/00-login-screen file with following content:
[org/gnome/login-screen]
# Do not show the user list
disable-user-list=true
2. (SLES/SLED 15 only) create the /etc/dconf/profile/gdm file with following content:
user-db:user
system-db:gdm
file-db:/usr/share/gdm/greeter-dconf-defaults
3. update system dconf database
dconf update
4. restart display manager

(on SLES/SLED 12) rcxdm restart
(on SLES/SLED 15) systemctl restart display-manager

After the desktop restarts the login screen should now present the user with login name and password prompts.
