Registration with SUSE Customer Center fails with SLES on z/VM 6.3

This document (7017253) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)

Situation

Under z/VM 6.3, SUSEConnect registration of a SLES 12 SP1 z/VM guest fails with the error message

SUSE::Connect::SystemCallError: Error: Unable to open configuration, return_code =-3

On SLES 12 SP2, it fails with return_code =-2.

Resolution

For SLES 12 SP1 or higher on z/VM 6.3, APAR VM 65419 or higher needs to be installed on z/VM.

As a workaround to avoid this issue until APAR 65419 can be installed,

umount /sys/kernel/debug

or choosing a host name with at least 8 characters will allow registration of an affected SLES 12 SP1 or SP2 guest system.

Cause

Additional Information

An update of the read_values tool to work around the missing APAR is being prepared for a maintenance update of the s390-tools package.
