Enable Live Migration for VirtualDomain Resource Agent

This document (000019790) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP4
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 12 SP4
SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 12 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 15 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 15 SP2

Situation

When trying to migrate VirtualDomain resource to another node the VM get stopped and then started on desired node. This is not desired in HA setup. QEMU support Live Migration but by default VirtualDomain resource agent doesn't do Live Migration.

Resolution

To allow VirtualDomain resource agent to migrate VM live set allow-migrate metadata option to allow. An example would be:

primitive vm01 VirtualDomain \
	params hypervisor="qemu:///system" \
	params config="/kvmshared/vmconfig/vm01.xml" \
	op start interval=0 timeout=120 \
	op stop interval=0 timeout=120 \
	utilization cpu=8 hv_memory=65536 \
        meta allow-migrate=true

Cause

allow-migrate option is set to false, which is the default, the VM will be shutdown on the first node and then restarted on the second node when it is being moved from one node to the other.
