System with root device on LVM fails to boot after upgrade to SLES10 SP1

Environment
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP1
Situation
After an upgrade from SLES10 GA to SLES10 Support Pack 1, the second stage instalation boot sequence hangs:
ERROR: Waiting for device /dev// to appear: ............not found -- exiting to /bin/sh
Resolution
Workaround:

Boot from DVD => Start Installation => "Boot Installed system"

Download and install mkinitrd-1.2-106.61or later

Rebuild initrd with lvm2 support:mkinitrd -f lvm2
