orarun wipes /etc/security/limits.conf on update from SLES10 SP3 to SLES11

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
Oracle 9i (9.2.07)

Situation

On SLES10 SP3 with the orarun package installed, /etc/security/limits.conf contains values
that tune SLES for oracle database workloads.

After an update to SLES11, limits.conf is completely empty.
There is a limits.conf.rpmnew, which contains only the default comments, no orarun values.

Resolution


The orarun package is not designed to handle upgrades.
In addition, is is partially obsolete and not well suited for todays database demands.

A feature request has been opened to update orarun to the new demands.
This will be introduced in one of the future SLES Versions.

Meanwhile, please backup the limits.conf file before updating to SLES11 and copy it back after the update.
For special purposes (e.g. multiple database instances) please refer to the Oracle Support database or in
case you are using SAP with Oracle, install the package sapconf instead of orarun.
