Registering <addon> extensions with autoyast fails

This document (7022784) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

An autoyast control file is configured to register the server and install from online updates and to include the Software Developer's Kit (SDK) extension. It fails to register and install the associated SDK packages and patterns.

The documentation shows the example:
<addons config:type="list">
 <addon>
  <!-- SUSE Linux Enterprise Software Development Kit -->
  <name>sle-sdk</name>
  <version>12.2</version>
  <arch>x86_64</arch>
 </addon>
</addons>
The yast logs show an error relating to addons.

Resolution

Include the <addons> tag within the scope of the <suse_register> tag along with the other <suse_register> tags.
<suse_register>
<addons config:type="list"> <addon> <!-- SUSE Linux Enterprise Software Development Kit --> <name>sle-sdk</name> <version>12.2</version> <arch>x86_64</arch> </addon> </addons>
<suse_register>
