This document (7024078) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 4 (SLES 12 SP4) s390x

Situation

Both of 51-*.rules and 41-*.rules files are contained in initrd after upgrade to SLES12SP4 from former SLES versions on s390x.
The system might error on boot after upgrade to SLES12SP4.

Resolution

1. Upgrade dracut package to use version dracut-044.2-10.15.2.s390x.rpm or above.
2. Invoke chzdev command to create 41-*.rules files for each device as the following examples.
   chzdev command generates appropriate rules file format for SLES12SP4.

   <DASD>
        # chzdev dasd --no-root-update -e 0.0.XXXX
   <FCP>
        # chzdev zfcp-lun --no-root-update -e 0.0.HHHH:0xWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW:0xLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  NOTE: If 51-*.rules file contain options (failfast, cmb_enable and so on), These options also can be defined as parameters.  please see also chzdev manpage for more details.

3. Remove 51-*rules files.
        # rm /etc/udev/rules.d/51-*.rules

4. Update initrd.
        # dracut -f
        # grub2-install

5. Reboot system.

Cause

Both 41-dasd-eckd-0.0.0101.rules and 51-dasd-0.0.0101.rules exists in initrd.
In this case both files have the same configuration to the same one DASD device address 0.0.0101.
File name start with prefix 51- is valid until SLES12SP3; prefix 41- is used since SLES12SP4.
