This document (3009311) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9

Situation

From a SLES machine, you can open the browser to http://localhost:631 to administrate CUPS.   However, the default CUPS configuration will not allow this tool to be accessed from remote browsers.

Resolution

To make this available from a remote browser:

1.  vi /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
2.  The following bolded items must be changed within the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:
Note:  The 3 below documented sections do not show consecutively in the cupsd.conf as they appear below.   Search the cupsd.conf to locate these sections.

3.  Restart CUPS
/etc/init.d/cups restart

4.  From a workstation's browser, go to http://[ip_or_dns_of_SLES]:631

5.  You may be prompted to log in.  To successfully authenticate, the account must be added to the group lp.  This can be accomplished by issuing the following command:
lppasswd -a [Linux_user_account] -g sys
