Permission Denied errors when starting Tomcat

This document (3792752) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

You are seeing errors similar to the following when starting Tomcat:

permission denied ... writing to /var/opt/n0vell/tomcat4/logs/catalina.out

The /var/opt/n0vell/ dir and some subdirs had incorrect permissions.

Resolution

To resolve, execute the following commands as root user:

chmod 755 /var/opt/n0vell/
chmod 755 /var/opt/n0vell/*
chmod 775 /var/opt/n0vell/tomcat4/

Additional Information

Unconfirmed: After making the above changes it may then be necessary to exit the current shell session (presumably to reset environment variables) and log back in before next attempting to start Tomcat.
