startx will not bring up xwindows because of Pango errors

This document (7005490) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3

Situation

When running startx the following error comes up.

(gnome_segv:4263): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically loaded modules

were found. Pango will not work correctly. This probably means

there was an error in the creation of:

'/etc/opt/gnome/pango/pango.modules'

You may be able to recreate this file by running pango-querymodules.

However, running pango-querymodules produces a screen full of output and pango errors.

When pango-querymodules is run, the screen is filled with pango information and errors.

Resolution

The problem is that the pango.modules file needs to be written.  pango-querymodules is producing the right output to create that file, however the output of the pango-querymodules is ending up on the terminal screen instead of in the file.

The output of pango-querymodules needed to be re-directed to the file.

We used the following command to create the file:

pango-querymodules > /etc/opt/gnome/pango.modules

This created the file and startx worked on the next re-try.
