SLES10SP3 panics with: Kernel panic - not syncing: Not enough memory for aperture

This document (7005733) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3

Situation

Concerns x86_64 only.
After updating to kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.60.1 on a x86-64 installation, the system stops with messages like:
  Checking aperture...
  CPU 0: aperture @ 1900000000 size 32 MB
Aperture from northbridge cpu 0 too small (32 MB)
  No AGP bridge found
Your BIOS doesn't leave a aperture memory hole
Please enable the IOMMU option in the BIOS setup
This costs you 64 MB of RAM
Cannot allocate aperture memory hole (ffff810104000000,65536K)
Kernel panic - not syncing: Not enough memory for aperture
Booting with kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.59.1 does not show this behavior.

Resolution

Solution:

Please update to kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.66.1.x86_64 or later

Workaround:

As an interim solution the x86-64 architecture specific boot option

iommu=soft

may be used to get the system back online.
