SLE11: X causes high CPU load after logging into GNOME desktop

This document (7005704) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

After logging into a GNOME session the command 'top' shows almost 100% CPU usage for X. This applies to all available users on the system. Other desktop environments as GNOME are not affected (e.g. IceWM).

Resolution

Solution:

Update the packages:
  • xorg-x11-server
  • xorg-x11-server-extra
  • xorg-x11-Xvnc
to version 7.4-27.15.12.1 or higher.

Workaround:

As an alternative to above solution edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and search for

Section "Extensions"
EndSection

at the end of the file. Add the option

Option "SYNC""off"

The result should look like:

Section "Extensions"
Option "SYNC""off"
EndSection

Safe the file and restart X using

rcxdm restart

Additional Information

Please note that Option "SYNC""off" temporarily disables the desktop effects. As soon as the issue is solved the option may be safely removed from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
