suse_register aborts with curl error 28

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

Registering a SLE10 or SLE11 based products fails with:

linux:~# suse_register -a regcode-sles=$REGCODE -a email=$EMAILADDRESS
Execute curl command failed with '28':

Resolution

Error 28 is defined as operation timeout, the client could not connect to the registration server defined in /etc/suseRegister.conf. A possible situation is a proxy is required for the connection to be established but only a http proxy was configured where as the registration takes place over a SSL encrypted connection. Please make check the proxy settings in the YaST2 proxy module or in /etc/sysconfig/proxy.
