Kernel crash with 10Gb Emulex card during card configuration

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

The kernel crashes when it is tried to configure the be2net based card. Usually this happens during the installation after the first reboot. Following is displayed/logged:

/usr/src/packages/BUILD/be2net-4.0.487.10/obj/default/be_main.c:1129!
[  413.296538] invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP

The issue only happens when a cable is plugged into the port.

Resolution

This is a firmware issue, please update the firmware of the Emulex 10GB card. The firmware needs to be at least >= 4.0.487.13

The current firmware version can be checked with

/sbin/ethtool -i eth0
