The tar utility does not support extended attributes

This document (7016815) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

The tar --xattrs option does not seem to be functioning.  When attempting to tar files with their extended attribute, the command returns the error message: "tar: XATTR support is not available".
The rpm version is tar-1.27.1-2.22.x86_64

The tar file is created, but when the files are extracted the extend attributes are missing from the file.

Resolution

The package seems to be missing the libacl-devel, libattr-devel, and libselinux-devel which are required to provide xattrs support.  These build requirements have been added to the package for future updates.
