Delayed boot after updating to latest kernel versions

Environment
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3
Situation
SLES11 SP3: 3.0.101-0.47.79
SLES11 SP4: 3.0.101-71
booting is delayed and the system may appear to hang for between 30 to 60 minutes, if left long enough the system may eventually boot normally.
Resolution
For SLES11 SP4 the mass PTF can be downloaded using SUSE PTF for SP4.

Cause
This can also be seen on systems without qlogic HBA (Host Bus Adapter) cards.
Additional Information
pci 0000:01:00.0: vpd r/w failed. This is likely a firmware bug on this device. Contact the card vendor for a firmware update.
