Offline migration from SLES12 SP5 to SLES15 SP5 fails after selecting the previous installation

This document (000021460) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SLES 12 SP5
SLES for SAP 12 SP5

Situation

During an offline migration from SLES 12 SP5 using SLES 15 SP5 iso media, the process is interrupted with the error:

Internal error: private constant Y2Packager::ProductUpgrade::MAPPING referenced

This happens after selecting the previous SLES 12 SP5 installation and before further module and extension management is presented on the screen.

Resolution

1. If using the SLE-15-SP5-Full-x86_64-GM-Media1.iso available from SCC:

When booting the SLES 15 SP5 media and highlight the "Upgrade" option, insert the option below:

self_update=0
This will prevent the installer wizard program from updating from the network.

2. Alternatively, using the Quarterly Update iso images like SLE-15-SP5-Full-x86_64-QU3-Media1.iso, which distribute a fixed version of the installer.

Cause

A possible bug in the installer wizard is being investigated.
