Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10 comes with a "lock screen" functionality that appears once someones screen has been idle for a period of time. To unlock a screen you must provide the password of the current user or root user password in order to unlock the screen. On this same screen is a switch user button. Once pressed it will build a list of available users. However, if you are authenticating against a large eDirectory or Active Directory implementation, it could take quite a bit of time to build that user list.

Workaround

Launch gconf-editor by going to Computer, More Applications, and clicking on GNOME Configuration Editor.
Expand apps, select the gnome-screen-saver folder, and uncheck the user_switch_enabled option.
