YaST2 online update reinstalls old kernel in multiversion kernel enabled setups

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

On systems with multiversion kernel enabled settings in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf, YaST2 Online Update reinstalls kernel-default-base-2.6.32.59-0.7.1 each time.

Resolution

When configuring multiversion kernel set up, please do not use YaST2 Online Update to patch the system but the zypper command instead as outlined in the documentation. For details please see the SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 System Analysis and Tuning Guide available at:
