Situation

Resolution
Cause
Additional Information
syncbefore attempting to attach memory may free up enough space for the operation to succeed, but it is unreliable and may temporarily have adverse impact on system performance.
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
As a reliable alternative to memory hot plugging on VMware virtualization products it is recommend to use ballooning instead, as described in chapter 3.3 of the Understanding Memory Resource Management in VMware ESX Server whitepaper by VMware.
