Kdump fails to capture vmcore using multipath VFC disk as kdump target on IBM POWER9

This document (7022750) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)

Situation

On IBM POWER9 servers kdump fails to capture the vmcore when using a multipath VFC disk as the kdump target.

Resolution

The solution is to use alternative dump methods like capturing to a VFC or some other disk without multipath, NFS, SSH, etc.

Cause

This failure occurs because the VFC driver seems to discover the LUNs, but the vmcore capture process is timing out while waiting for the mpath mapping of the disk to appear.
