SLED 10 : Configuring a secondary video card as the primary video card

This document (3522835) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

This document is intended to describe how to use a secondary video card as the video target for XWindows.
ERROR: Sax: ups lost card during probing
This is often seen when attempting to specify a driver for the secondary card, as done by :
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

Resolution

First, the specific card desired must be identified. This can be done using :
sax2 -p
This will print a list of the cards, the detected chip sets, as well as an ID number for each card. Then, rerun sax specifying the card and the driver :
init 3
sax2 -c [card index] [card index]=[card driver]
For an example, on some systems that include a secondary NVidia card, the sax2 configuration line would appear like :
sax2 -c 1 1=nvidia
This will force Sax to reattempt configuration using the #1 card in the sax2 -p output, and force it to use the nvidia driver (override detection).
